When a child tells you
How you respond in the first few minutes matters. You don’t need perfect words. These are the things that help most.
Stay calm.
Your child will read your face. Take a breath. You can feel everything later, with another adult.
Believe them, and say so.
“I believe you. Thank you for telling me.” Few words matter more.
Tell them it is not their fault.
Whatever happened, and however long it took to tell you.
Don’t ask for details.
Let trained professionals do the interviewing. Listen to what your child offers, and write down what they said in their own words.
Keep them safe.
Keep your child away from the person they named, and don’t confront that person yourself.
Make the report.
In Tennessee, every adult who suspects child sexual abuse is required to report it. Call the state hotline or 911.
Look after yourself, too.
Your child needs you steady for the long road. Reach out to someone you trust, or to us.
